Castel Mareccio, Castel Roncolo and Castel Firmiano overlook Bolzano like a discreet, unobtrusive presence. Surrounded by vineyards, hills and rocky outcrops, they tell the story of the city from different perspectives, each with its own pace. Built in the 13th century, Castel Mareccio later opened up to the Renaissance, becoming a charming residence nestled in the landscape. Since 1237, Castel Roncolo has conserved medieval fresco cycles depicting a surprisingly vibrant world of ladies, knights and jousts. One of the oldest, Castel Firmiano dominates the valley on local porphyry stone. Over the centuries it served as a strategic stronghold and as a symbol of the city's history. Today it houses the Messner Mountain Museum. Together, they stand as a silent presence watching the city from afar.
